Legal Insurance

A legal event can happen to anyone. Some you can plan for, like buying a home or preparing a will. Others are unexpected, like a contractor dispute or tax audit.

When these things happen, finding the right attorney can be challenging—and expensive. The legal insurance through ARAG can help.

 

How it Works

You can talk to an attorney in person or by phone. When you use ARAG network attorneys, most covered services are paid in full. You also have access to online resources and legal documents.

  • In-office services: You receive access to a nationwide network of more than 12,000 credentialed attorneys who can:
    • Review or prepare documents
    • Make follow-up calls or write letters on your behalf
    • Advise you on legal issues
    • Represent you in court
  • Telephone advice: You can call a network attorney for unlimited legal advice to help prepare personal documents, letters, or a will.
  • Online resources: ARAG provides online tools and useful information to learn more about legal issues on your own. Their DIY Docs® can help you create over 350 state-specific, legally valid documents online.

To use legal insurance, call ARAG customer service toll-free at 800-247-4184, Monday-Friday between 5am and 5pm Pacific Time. An ARAG Customer Care Specialist can discuss your issue and point you in the right direction. You can also research a legal issue by visiting the ARAG website, access code 18285cms. If you are a member, you can access all of the tools and resources by logging in. If you are not a member, you can view educational materials by entering 18285cms for the company access code.

If you choose to use a non-network attorney for a covered service when a network attorney is available, you will be billed directly by the non-network attorney and then file a claim with ARAG. You will be reimbursed for covered legal services according to the non-network attorney schedule. You can obtain a claim form by calling ARAG at 800-247-4184 or by logging in as a member to the ARAG website, access code 18285cms.

ARAG Network

ARAG’s network has more than 12,000 credentialed attorneys across the U.S. When you use ARAG network attorneys, most covered services are paid in full, and no claim forms are required.

If there are no network attorneys located within 30 miles of your home, ARAG will find an attorney in your area so that you can receive in-network benefits.

If your matter cannot be resolved over the phone and is not fully covered under your insurance policy and not excluded by the plan, you are eligible to work with a Reduced Fee Network Attorney and receive a reduced fee that will be at least 25% off the attorney’s normal hourly rate. Payment of attorney fees is handled directly between you and the Reduced Fee Network Attorney. Access to a Reduced Fee Network Attorney is subject to availability. You are encouraged to contact ARAG to determine proximity to a Reduced Fee Network Attorney within legal practice areas.

 

What’s Covered

Legal insurance covers a variety of services including, but not limited to:

  • Estate planning—standard will, living will, revocable and irrevocable trusts, and power of attorney.
  • Consumer issues—contractor disputes, buying or selling a car, auto repairs, credit records correction, and consumer fraud.
  • Family law—adoption, pre-marital and postnuptial agreements, domestic partnership agreements, divorce, elder law, guardianship, school hearings, gender identification change, restraining order, hospital visitation authorization, and funeral directives.
  • Real estate—buying or selling a home, foreclosure, building codes, easement, zoning and variances, and neighbor disputes.
  • Taxes—IRS tax audit and collection, state and local tax audit and collection, and property tax assessments.
  • Traffic without DUI—traffic tickets, restoration of driver's license after suspension or revocation.

Exclusions

The plan does not cover the following:

  • Matters against the Company or ARAG.
  • Matters against the interests of a Company employee brought by a dependent.
  • Matters arising out of a business interest, investment interests, employment matters, your role as an officer or director of an organization, and patents or copyrights.
  • Matters involving class actions, punitive damages, malpractice, court appeals, or post judgments (settlement agreement signed by all parties, final binding arbitration, judgment issued by a court).
  • Matters deemed by ARAG to be frivolous or lacking merit, or in actions where you are the plaintiff and the amount ARAG pays for your legal services exceeds the amount in dispute, or in their belief you are not actively and reasonably pursuing resolution in your case.
  • Matters outside the jurisdiction of the United States of America.

 

Enrollment and Cost

You may enroll yourself and your eligible dependents for legal insurance when you are first hired and during the annual Open Enrollment period. Eligible dependents include your spouse or domestic partner and unmarried children under age 26. 

You can purchase legal insurance for $9.12 per pay period. The cost is the same for employee only coverage and family coverage, regardless of how many dependents are enrolled.
