HMSA Medical
If you live in Hawaii, you have three medical plan options through HMSA: Preferred Provider Plan, CompMED Plan, and Health Plan Hawaii Plus.
This information here is intended to help you understand the plan and how it works. It is not the official Summary Plan Description. To view the complete Summary Plan Description, please reference the applicable Carrier Booklet below and the CMSU Wrap SPD.
Preferred Provider Plan
This is a preferred provider organization (PPO) plan that allows you to visit any provider you wish. However, plan benefits will be greater when you use PPO network providers because:
- The plan pays higher benefits for network providers than it does for non-network providers.
- There is no annual deductible when you use network providers; an annual deductible does apply for services you receive from non-network providers.
- Network providers agree to negotiated rates while non-network providers do not. Therefore, your coinsurance (the percentage of expenses that is your responsibility) is based on a lower amount of expenses when you use network providers.
See the PPO medical and prescription drug booklets for plan details.
CompMED Plan
This is a comprehensive medical plan that also has a network of providers. The benefit level is the same whether you use network providers or not. However, if you do use network providers, you'll get the advantages of having your doctor file claims for you and accepting your doctor visit copay as payment in full. With more than 95% of doctors in Hawaii participating in the network, there's a good chance that you won't have to switch doctors if you enroll in the CompMED Plan.
See the CompMED medical and prescription drug booklets for details
Health Plan Hawaii Plus Plan
This is a health maintenance organization (HMO) that provides benefits only when you see HMO network providers (an exception is made for eligible emergencies). Most charges are covered at 100% after a copayment.
See the Health Plan Hawaii Plus medical and prescription drug booklets for details.
