How the Plan Works

How the Plan Works

The legal insurance plan provides in-office services, telephone services, and online services.

  • In-office services: You can visit with a network attorney who can:
    • Review or prepare documents
    • Make follow-up calls or write letters on your behalf
    • Advise you on legal issues
    • Represent you in court
  • Telephone advice: You can call a network attorney toll free for unlimited legal advice to help prepare personal documents, letters, or a will.
  • Online resources: ARAG provides online tools and useful information to learn more about legal issues on your own. Their DIY Docs® can help you create over 350 state-specific, legally valid documents online.

How to Access Services

If a legal issue comes up, call ARAG customer service toll-free at 800-247-4184, Monday-Friday between 5am and 5pm Pacific Time. An ARAG Customer Care Specialist can discuss your issue and point you in the right direction, whether that is finding more information, recommending you talk with an attorney over the phone, or helping you find an attorney who can consult with you in-office.

You can also research a legal issue by visiting ARAG’s website. If you are a member, you can access all of the tools and resources by logging in. If you are not a member, you can view educational materials by entering 18285cms for the company access code.

ARAG Network

ARAG’s network has more than 12,000 credentialed attorneys across the U.S. When you use ARAG network attorneys, most covered services are paid in full, and no claim forms are required.

If there are no network attorneys located within 30 miles of your home, ARAG will find an attorney in your area so that you can receive in-network benefits.

If you choose to use a non-network attorney for a covered service when a network attorney is available, you will be billed directly by the non-network attorney and then file a claim with ARAG. You will be reimbursed for covered legal services according to the non-network attorney schedule. You can obtain a claim form by calling ARAG at 800-247-4184 or by logging in as a member to the ARAG website

Additional Plan Provisions

  • Waiver of premium. If your eligible dependents are enrolled in the plan, coverage will continue without premium for one year in the event of your death. If you are called to active duty for more than 30 consecutive days for military service or a declared national emergency and you continue to be eligible for Canon Medical Systems’ benefits, coverage for your enrolled dependents will continue without payment of premium for the length of your absence.
  • Conversion. If you lose coverage under this plan because you are no longer eligible, you may continue legal insurance and pay premiums to ARAG directly. You must notify ARAG within ninety (90) days of the disqualifying event to make arrangements for premium payment. Payment of premium is required from the last date of your eligibility under this policy.
  • Fraud or abuse. This plan will not provide benefits if you have intentionally concealed or misrepresented any material fact or circumstance or have made false statements or engaged in fraudulent conduct relating to your insurance. ARAG may discontinue your benefits if they deem that you are exhibiting hostile or abusive behavior towards them, their employees, and/or their network attorneys.
  • Subrogation. ARAG may require you to assign all rights of recovery of legal fees to the extent that payment is made by them.
  • Grievances. If you have a problem with a network attorney in the handling of a legal matter covered under this insurance policy, contact ARAG for assistance in resolving your issue. You have the right to file a complaint with the State Bar about your attorney at any time.
