“It was that crazy little pedometer that changed my life.”
—Evelyn Byrne, Ultrasound Applications Specialist, Irvine West Office

Evelyn is a wife and mother, and her job requires a lot of travel. Like most people, her family and work responsibilities put huge demands on her time. Stress, low energy, and insomnia were a regular part of her life.

In recent years, Evelyn’s efforts to begin an exercise program were limited to one or two workouts a week, as time allowed. She decided to give the Sonic Boom program a chance, and that was a turning point.

“It was that crazy little pedometer that changed my life. I got my pedometer and became addicted to walking, running, and exercise in general. I love tracking my steps. It’s amazing how many steps accumulate during the course of a day. As the steps accumulate, so does my energy.”

And that added energy is what allows her to make even more time for exercise.

“There is always time during the week now. And when I am home, moving is a family activity. There’s walking to be done at the airport. There are beautiful paths to be traversed with my husband and daughter. There’s a treadmill at every hotel, just begging for me to run on it. And there is always my favorite workout DVD.”

Evelyn was amazed how many steps she accumulated during the course of the day and how easy it was to track her activity. She now walks 5,000 steps a day and works out for 30-90 minutes at least four times a week. Inspired by her teammates during the “Walking on Sunshine” contest, Evelyn surprised herself by walking over 40 miles over two weekends.

She now feels active and vital. Even better, Evelyn has noticed improvements in her emotional well-being.

“I lost my bouts of insomnia, episodes of anxiety, and days of low energy. Now I look forward to exercising. It’s a huge means to stress reduction.”

Who knew that a crazy little pedometer could improve your quality of life?
